On 15 September 2022 we attended the BayWa r.e. Sustainable Day; the project took place in collaboration with Phoresta, a non-profit association that promotes actions to tackle global warming. They gave us access to the biodiversity forest in Bologna, where we planted several types of shrubs and plants.
Below is the report directly from Baywa, a few days before the event:
‘To make our project even more concrete, in mid-September 2022 we will plant trees and shrubs that will absorb all the CO2 produced by the visitors who came to our stand and all the CO2 produced by the BayWa r.e. Team to reach the fair.
In collaboration with the non-profit association Phoresta, we will expand the biodiversity forest in Bologna, improving the existing ecosystem and contributing to the repopulation of trees and animals in the area. The biodiversity forest is land owned by Phoresta located in the badlands south of Bologna, created to host environmental sustainability, awareness, and improvement projects. The biodiversity comes from the choice of wood types, made by a professional agronomist, helping the development of the area from a biological, environmental, and geological point of view.
Among the positive elements of the forest, there is not only the production of oxygen and the absorption of CO2, but also the greater resistance of the soil to runoff, the repopulation of animals who thus find better refuge, the repopulation of neighbouring lands thanks to pollination and seed spreading, and much more. During the BayWa r.e. Sustainable Day, we will have the opportunity to plant the first trees and shrubs that will repopulate the area, thanks to the support of Phoresta and our partners. Each tree will be planted in a hole prepared with an auger, covered with soil with a high mycorrhiza content (beneficial mushrooms that facilitate root growth) and will be equipped with a bamboo stem to support its growth, a mulch to cover the first layer of soil, and anti-hare protection. Our seedlings will be constantly monitored, with appropriate irrigation and care in order to make them grow better and better.
However, all this cannot guarantee that all plants will survive, but thanks to the agreement with Phoresta, they will be replaced with new shrubs and trees in order to recreate a new forest and a new “lung” for the planet.’
